    Unlike gold-plated, gold-filled is made by applying a thick layer of gold to a metal base, usually brass or copper.

    This layer of gold is much thicker than that of gold plated, traditionally around 5% to 10% of the total thickness of the object . This means that goldfilled jewelry contains 50 to 100 times more gold than gold-plated jewelry.
